ABEL PEREIRA

Abel Pereira presented himself for the first time as a solist at the age of 11, at Rivoli Theatre (Oporto). His teachers were Eddy Tauber and Bohdan Sebestik. Since then, he has been playing solo, with orchestra and chamber music all over Europe, Ásia, Africa, South América, East and Middle East.

He learned from professor Bodhan Sebestik and then he went to Germany where he had classes with Marie Luise-Neunecker. He got the master diplome at the Hoschulle of Frankfurt and studied with Herman Baumann, Stefan Dohr, Jeffrey Bryant, Radovan Vlatckowich, Prague Horn Trio and German Horn Ensemble.

Still as a student, he was awarded in many international contests: Leeuwarden (Nederland), Makneukirchen (Germany), Concertino Praha (Cech Republic). He also won the 1st prize in Young Musicians of RDP (Portugal).

Since 1995, and for six years, he performed with the European Community’s Youth Orchestra in the major concert halls in Europe: the Royal Albert Hall, Berliner Philarmonie, La Scala de Milano, Cite de la Musique, Konzertgebouw, etc.

He worked with several chiefs and musicians, such as: Carlo Maria Giullini, Mstilav Rostropovich, Bernard Haitink, Sir Colin Davis, Vladimir Askenazy, Cláudio Abbado, Emanuel Ax, Radu Lupu, Marta Argerich, Barbara Hendriks, etc.

In 1998, he was awarded with the EUYO Master Prize, which was given by Vladimir Askenazy, Bernard Haitink and Professor Lutz Kohler.

As a solist, he played with North Nederland Symphonic Orchestra, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre Philarmonique de Besançon, Orquestra de Valência, Orquestra da Câmara de Santiago de Compostela, and several orchestras in Portugal: Orquestra Municipal de Braga, Orquestra Regional do Norte, Orquestra Clássica do Porto, Filarmonia das Beiras, Orquestra Nacional do Porto, Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orquestra Sinfonietta, Orquestra dos Templários, Orquestra Musicare, Orquestra Artave and Orquestra da Escola Profissional de Viana do Castelo.

He played and recorded live for NDR, TF 1, RTL 4, BBC 2, Rundfunk, RTP and RDP. Back in 2001, he recorded the contemporary works for solo horn and piano, and, the year after, along with Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, he launched a new record with Mozart’s concerts.

He is often invited to represent Portugal in concerts abroad and he’s part of national juries in several universities, professional orchestras and European Community’s Youth Orchestra. He has been invited to many music festivals in Portugal.

In 2003 and 2004, he performed a number of concerts in Portugal, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Brazil and Estonia and he has participated as a guest solist at the Trompists World Congress, which took place in Valência (Spain). During the 2006/2007season, Abel performed in ecitals in Portugal, Spain, UK, Mozambique, Czech Republic and France.

His future engagements for 2007/2008 include concerts in Portugal, the UK, Spain, Switzerland, Germany and South Africa, as well as a new recording of recital pieces with piano accompaniment.
Abel Pereira is currently the principal horn of the Oporto National Orchestra. He also teaches at the Professional School of Music in Espinho and at the National Superior Orchestra Academy.
